12:00 PM: Not just back-cracking: Chiropractic care for your dog and cat

Dr. Jennifer Selvig, Veterinarian, Cleary Lake Veterinary Hospital
Chiropractic is a manual therapy that focuses on the relationship between the spinal column, extremities, and the nervous system and their impact on an animal's biomechanics. Chiropractic improves both the animal's biomechanics and neurologic function by removing restrictions within the the nervous system and restoring normal motion to the joints. If your pet is suffering from stiffness, decreased performance, a change in posture or attitude, primary neck or back problems, lack of coordination, muscle atrophy, or weakness, chiropractic care can help!  Dr. Selvig will give a short talk on how chiropractic works, as well as a live demonstration of what an adjustment looks like.

1:00 PM: Pet Musical Chairs Competition

Musical Chairs is a doggy variation of the classic children’s game. Music plays as handlers walk with their dog’s off-leash counter-clockwise around a circle of chairs. When the music stops, the handlers instruct their dogs to sit by verbal request and hand signal only (i.e., without touching them) and rush to sit on a vacant chair in the circle. Last dog (and person) sitting wins!

1:30 PM: Acupuncture For Animals

Dr. Kathy Ott, Veterinarian, Cleary Lake Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Ott has been certified through the International Acupuncture Society since 1995. Since then she has helped numerous dogs, cats, and horses for a variety of conditions including arthritis, digestive problems, neurologic issues, reproduction issues, and allergic issues and many more. Benefits of acupuncture include pain relief and reestablishment of the body’s homeostasis, the body’s ability to heal itself and the lack of side effects. Generally 1-4 treatments are recommended. Most animals tolerate the procedure quite well and don’t require restraint or sedation. Many seem to enjoy the procedure. Snakes and Skinks! Lizards and Geckos! Turtles and Toads! Tons of folks think that reptiles make super cool pet companions and, as a result, these incredible creatures continue to grow in popularity. In fact, an estimated 4.6 million households in the US happen now own at least one reptile. Sadly, many prospective pet parents have no idea which of these magnificent creatures would make the best fit for their lifestyle or family, leaving millions of animals misunderstood and mistreated right from the start. Learning about the natural history, safe handling, and proper captive care of these beautiful creatures is the key to ensuring that our reptile friends thrive as they should. The Minnesota Herpetological Society works to educate the public on the care and needs of these amazing animals. They also work to spread the word that not only are reptiles great pets, but they also play an important role in the wild. Join them as they share some fun facts and fascinating stories about the amazing reptiles in their care.
